Student guide
Everything nobody
Everything nobody
tells you beforehand.
A practical guide to arriving and settling in — assembled from what our students say they wish they'd known.
Preparing to study in Malaysia
Before you fly
- Confirm your offer letter and student pass approval
- Book flights only after your visa approval letter arrives
- Arrange your first month's accommodation in advance
- Carry certified copies of every academic document
- Notify your bank that you'll be transacting from Malaysia
What to pack
- Passport, offer letter, visa approval and academic originals in your cabin bag
- Medication with a doctor's prescription letter
- A universal travel adapter — Malaysia uses the UK three-pin plug
- Light clothing plus one warm layer for heavily air-conditioned lecture halls
- Modest clothing for campus and public spaces
Your first week
- Complete university registration and collect your student ID
- Open a local bank account — the university will advise which banks
- Get a local SIM card at the airport or a nearby mall
- Register with the international student office
- Locate the campus clinic and save the emergency numbers
Money and budgeting
- Set a realistic monthly budget before you arrive, not after
- Track the first month closely — it's always the most expensive
- Cook at home more often than you think you will
- Keep an emergency fund equal to one month of living costs
- Understand your visa's work restrictions before accepting any job
Settling in
- Join at least one student society in your first month
- Learn a few phrases of Bahasa Malaysia — it's appreciated
- Agree a regular call schedule with family back home
- Use the university counselling service if you're struggling — that's what it's for
- Your Youglober advisor stays reachable, so use them
